Hello! I’m a freelance writer and editor based in Denver, Colorado. My work appears in The Washington Post, Midwest Living, Gastro Obscura, Vox, StarChefs Rising Stars Magazine, and more. I also test and edit recipes and collaborate on cookbooks.

About me

I grew up on a wheat farm in Eastern Washington and learned to drive a car when I was eight years old. My parents and I moved to Germany when I was 13, where I grew to love traveling, trying all the local foods, and learning languages. I majored in Russian and studied abroad in Moscow for a year so I could do just that.

In 2011 I moved to Washington, D.C., where I eventually began working with cookbook author Joan Nathan before going on to the Food section at The Washington Post. I’ve also sold spices, poured wine, peddled fruit, and worked for a lobbyist.

I started my writing and editing business in 2019. Read on to see how we might work together, or head to my portfolio to browse my clips.

Writing

While I started out in food, my range expands to any subject with a good story. I’ve written about grains in Colorado, cider from Pennsylvania, kithul tapping in Sri Lanka, Russian cookbooks, Norwegian sandwiches, art exhibits, recycling programs, and much more for newspapers, magazines, B2B publications, alumni magazines, businesses, and newsletters.

11 years of working in publishing mean I know my way around researching, interviewing, fact checking, and delivering clean copy on time. If you’re an editor or business looking for a writer, please do get in touch.

Copy and recipe editing

I’ve spent 11 years helping cookbook authors, scholars, writers, and small business owners hone their words to effectively deliver their message. Clients include cookbook author Joan Nathan, a multinational team at the Center for International Private Enterprise, and cookbook store Bold Fork Books.

My editing services extend to recipes, too, which includes translating restaurant recipes to be more friendly to the home cook. I’ve edited recipes for fermented food company Number 1 Sons, writer and organizer Tyler French, cookbook author Joan Nathan, restaurateur José Andrés, and more.

I also test recipes — see my recipe testing page to learn more.
